Internships

As someone who’s been responsible for creating, implementing, and managing an internship for organizations during my career, I’ve seen students who were incredibly savvy and successful in translating that internship into full-time employment. In several instances, I’ve seen students who took a short-term internship of a few months into several years and even into the creation of a full-time job, just for them.

This service would focus on how to approach employers regarding internships as well as what to do when you’re in an internship. Depending on your year of schooling, we’ll look at a short-term and/or long-term strategy that would bridge toward a full-time job upon graduating.


Should I accept an unpaid internship?

This really depends on the scope of work and the type of organization you’re wanting an internship with. More than ever, internships are becoming paid due to the competitive market. At the same time, so many organization use an internship as cheap labor rather than focusing on projects or specialized work that would benefit both the student and the organization. There are ways to gain insights during the recruiting and interview process to see if the organization offers a good internship program.

How do I increase the duration of my internship?

Most internships have a finite period such as a summer internship. Some may extend throughout the school year. While gaining exposure and experience at an organization is the goal behind an internship, most students don’t realize just how much of a say they may have in extending or even creating a full-time position out of the internship. I’ve seen some brilliant examples of students who’ve created a career while they were students.


The sessions would include getting clear about the type of work or internship you’re seeking and working backwards to come up with a strategy, both short-term and long-term. While many students use family or friend networks to land an internship, it may not necessarily align with the type of work or organization you’re interested in.

This is about planning to go after the internship that you want, and earlier the better to take full-advantage of this opportunity.
